As you know, I'm in the midst of preparing all new work for an all-haiku feature next week at First Draft. Among other things, I have written a cycle of haikus entitled:

THE UNDER THE DOME CYCLE:
A series of haikus about carrying around Stephen King’s latest bestseller in public.

It's two pages worth of haikus, son.

I take it back: the poem I finished this morning - "The Barbecue Zodiac and Astrology Menu" - will be the longest original poem I've ever performed publicly.  Comes in just under 15 minutes, at 8 pages, 299 lines, over 1900 words.

Next time I'll be shooting for a 60-minute poem.  If I had another week without interruptions, I could do it. Next time.

Last year, when I was toying with the idea of doing all 24 hours with original material,* I knew I would need some long poems to pad out some of that time. As I begin to fill out my list of featured poets for the 24-hour read, I'm noticing trends.  More women than I might have guessed.  More short poems, too.

I am also in a serious spurt of original shot-calling.  The ideas are coming hard and fast.  Trying to get about ten poems done for the 24-hour feature.  We'll see.  I have enough previously ( Read more... )
